Scientific Evaluation Methods for Health Technology
Park Byung-Joo

Abstract
Recently new health technology has been developed very actively in Korea as well as worldwide, but appropriate scientific evaluation system for the new technology has not been established satisfactorily. Not a few people have suffered from lack of effectiveness and even from unexpected adverse events by the new technologies. Therefore it is very important to evaluate safety and efficacy of the new technology scientifically before their market approval. Scientific evidence can be produced based on sound research methodology, which can be the fundamental tool for evaluating new health technology. For generating scientific evidence of new treatment, surgery, or diagnostic tests, randomized controlled trials and systematic review are generally conducted. For obtaining meaningful and qualified results from systematic review, critical appraisal depends on the quality of medical literatures published. Appropriate scientific evaluation for new health technology using sound scientific methods cannot be too much exaggerated to protect patients and provide best benefit for them.
